Perfumed gloves especially caught the public imagination, a trend popularised by amateur parfumeuse Catherine de’ Medici, the colossally rich Florentine girl who became the powerful and sinister Queen of France. Some said the gloves she offered as gifts were not only perfumed but poisoned.
